THE ROLE

An experienced Pavement / Road Engineer is responsible for designing, evaluating and support delivery of flexible and rigid airfield pavements, heavy-duty apron and stand pavements, landside roads and pavement-management solutions. The role combines structural and geometric design, geotechnical interpretation, condition assessment, lifecycle planning, construction support and multidisciplinary coordination to deliver safe, durable, maintainable and cost-effective infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Advanced Design & Analysis: Design and evaluate flexible, rigid, and composite airfield pavements. Utilize industry-standard tools (FAARFIELD, COMFAA) to establish traffic forecasts, determine ACR/PCR classifications, and analyze overload implications.
• Geotechnical & Condition Assessment: Plan and interpret geotechnical investigations (CBR, FWD/HWD, PCI) and define strict material performance requirements for asphalt, concrete, and stabilized materials.
• Lifecycle Management & Rehab: Develop smart Airfield Pavement Management Systems (APMS). Create proactive maintenance, overlay, and reconstruction strategies tailored to tight operational possession windows.
• Landside & Geometric Design: Design airport access roads, circulation layouts, and parking interfaces using Civil 3D, ensuring seamless integration with drainage, utilities, and lighting.
• Construction Quality & Delivery: Review contractor mix designs, method statements, and trial sections. Lead site inspections and forensic defect investigations to ensure elite quality control.
• Digital & AI Innovation: Leverage approved AI-assisted automation and data analytics tools to optimize option studies, speed up calculations, and streamline technical reporting, while maintaining total professional accountability for deliverables.

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from a recognised institution; a master’s degree in pavement, highway or geotechnical engineering is advantageous.
• Minimum eight years of relevant civil-engineering design experience, including demonstrable airfield-pavement design or evaluation experience.
• Hands-on capability in pavement tools such as FAARFIELD, COMFAA, BAKFAA, ELMOD, MicroPAVER, PAVEAIR or equivalent.
• Strong knowledge of pavement mechanics, geotechnical engineering, materials, aircraft loading, ACR/PCR classification and construction-quality requirements.
• Experience in road geometric design using Civil 3D, OpenRoads or equivalent; AutoTURN, AviPLAN or similar swept-path tools are advantageous.
  
• Advanced AutoCAD and Civil 3D capability and working knowledge of BIM coordination, GIS and Common Data Environment workflows.
• Competence in AI-assisted engineering workflows, output validation, data-protection awareness and documentation of assumptions.
