Purpose of the Job
The Process Team Lead is responsible for leading and overseeing the Process Engineering discipline for thermal power plant projects, ensuring that the process design meets project requirements, applicable engineering standards, safety requirements, and operational objectives.
The role is responsible for ensuring that the process system:
- Meets the functional and performance requirements of the project.
- Meets applicable safety, reliability, maintainability, and operability requirements.
- Meets project specifications and recognized industry standards.
- Meets applicable equipment sparing requirements.
- Provides appropriate and accurate process information to other engineering disciplines.
- Supports efficient procurement, construction, pre-commissioning, commissioning, startup, and handover activities.
The Process Team Lead will also ensure that equipment sizing and selection are technically appropriate and that the overall process design is sufficiently developed to support procurement, construction, commissioning, and final handover.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Process Engineering & Design
- Lead and coordinate Process Engineering activities throughout the project lifecycle.
- Review and approve process engineering deliverables, including:
- Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs)
- Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
- Heat and Material Balances
- Hydraulic calculations and studies
- Heat balance diagrams
- Equipment data sheets
- Operating and process design manuals
- Process calculations and technical reports
- Review and approve Utility Flow Diagrams (UFDs) and Utility Distribution Diagrams (UDDs).
- Perform or review process simulations and develop basic process diagrams, including PFDs and heat/material balances.
- Ensure appropriate process equipment sizing and selection in accordance with project specifications and recognized industry practices.
- Review process design calculations and verify that design assumptions and parameters are technically sound.
- Ensure process designs adequately address safety, reliability, operability, maintainability, and efficiency requirements.
- Provide accurate process engineering data and technical input to other engineering disciplines.
Thermal Power Plant Engineering
- Apply relevant process engineering principles and practices applicable to thermal power plant systems.
- Ensure process engineering activities are aligned with the specific requirements of thermal power plant design and operation.
- Coordinate process design interfaces between major plant systems and other engineering disciplines.
- Review process requirements related to plant operation, startup, shutdown, utilities, and associated systems.
- Support resolution of technical issues arising during engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, and operation.
- Ensure process engineering deliverables remain aligned with project requirements and approved design changes.
Team Leadership & Coordination
- Lead and coordinate the Process Engineering team and allocate work according to project priorities.
- Review the work and deliverables prepared by Process Engineers and other team members.
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior and senior process engineers.
- Inform the Process team of project scope changes and provide direction on required technical modifications.
- Ensure process documentation is updated in line with approved changes.
- Coordinate closely with other engineering disciplines to ensure effective multidisciplinary integration.
- Participate in technical discussions and provide solutions to process-related issues.
- Monitor progress, identify technical or resource constraints, and escalate critical issues to the Project Engineering Manager.
Construction & Procurement Support
- Support the construction team during the construction phase to ensure that process design remains aligned with approved project requirements.
- Review and address technical queries, site requests, and design changes related to Process Engineering.
- Support the procurement team by providing process information and reviewing relevant technical documentation.
- Review vendor documentation and technical submissions where required.
- Ensure approved changes resulting from procurement or construction activities are properly reflected in process documentation.
Pre-Commissioning, Commissioning & Handover
- Provide Process Engineering support during pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
- Support troubleshooting and resolution of process-related issues during commissioning and startup.
- Review plant startup and shutdown procedures and other relevant operational procedures.
- Participate in commissioning, performance testing, and handover activities as required.
- Review and approve marked-up engineering documents prior to the preparation and issuance of final as-built documentation.
- Ensure process documentation is complete and technically accurate for final project handover.
Process Safety & Technical Reviews
- Participate in relevant technical and safety reviews, including:
- HAZOP
- HAZID
- SIL studies
- 3D model reviews
- Design reviews
- Operability and constructability reviews
- Ensure process engineering activities comply with applicable occupational health, safety, and environmental requirements.
- Identify process-related safety risks and support implementation of appropriate mitigation measures.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to occupational health and safety procedures.
Meetings & Reporting
- Attend weekly project meetings and additional technical meetings as required.
- Coordinate with the Project Engineering Manager and other engineering disciplines.
- Prepare periodic progress, activity, and achievement reports for the direct supervisor.
- Report significant technical issues, delays, design changes, and project risks in a timely manner.
General Administrative & Team Management Duties
- Identify Process Engineering manpower requirements in coordination with project management and HR.
- Identify training and development needs of Process Engineering team members.
- Coordinate with HR & Administration regarding employee development and training.
- Monitor the performance and workload of Process Engineering team members.
- Conduct or contribute to performance appraisals and recommend appropriate development actions.
- Manage employee leave and other administrative matters within the Process Engineering team.
- Nominate an appropriate deputy to cover the role during periods of absence.
- Perform other duties assigned by the direct manager within the scope of the role.

Job Specification
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Additional professional engineering qualifications or relevant technical certifications are an advantage.
Professional Experience
- Minimum 10–12 years of relevant Process Engineering experience.
- Significant experience in thermal power plant projects is mandatory.
- Proven experience in power plant process design and/or plant operations.
- Previous experience in a Process Team Lead, Lead Process Engineer, Senior Process Engineer, or equivalent senior technical role is required.
- Demonstrated experience coordinating Process Engineering activities across multidisciplinary project teams.
- Experience supporting projects through engineering, procurement, construction, pre-commissioning, commissioning, startup, and handover is highly desirable.
Mandatory Technical Experience
Candidates should demonstrate practical experience in:
- Thermal power plant process engineering.
